Dear visitor a very warm welcome for visiting my page and taking the time to a very important step in your life. The informtaion on the web site aims to provide a basic idea of the philosophy of my practise and does not limit therapy within the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy model that i generaly practise.

My name is Joseph Poullis and i am a Chartered Counselling Psychologist registered with the Health Professions Council in the UK practising in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Psychotherapy and Counselling in London.

What is therapy and why people seek help?

Therapy is not about curing psychological badness or faults so we can be immuned from further hurt or disappointments. Therapy is about the individual's enlightment and awakening in his/her process of  human existance when moving towards a state of wholeness. We do not acquire psychological disturbances, but rather human existence, living itself, is regarded as disturbing. Life can present us with difficulties and obstacles that sometimes can be hard to handle on one’s own. Rather than getting rid of the problems we encounter or pretend they are not there, psychotherapy aims to support the person in embracing these life challenges towards a more meaningful life. In therapy we help our clients to explore and discover their unique potentials.

Human existence inevitably involves certain givens: the experience of anxiety and guilt: living towards death; the responsibility for finding our own meaning in life; living in a with-world and at the same time being ultimately isolated. Therapy is a process to understand how a person perceives, selectively attend to reality and consciously uses non successful strategies to deal with the awaking mind.

Cognitive Beahavioural Therapy is one model of facilitating the persons understanding and mindfulness people encounter in unresolved grief, fear, wounding, and unfinished developmental business with parents, siblings, friends, spouses, children and others. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a process of understanding disfunctional mental patterns in existence and with a deep attention to the whole of our life can bring us the capacity to love well and live freely.

Do you ever think like that? Does this sound at all like you?

In order for us to set realistic treatment goals and priorities, it is important to evaluate what resources you have available to pay for your treatment. If you have a health insurance policy e.g. BUPA, AXA Norwich Union, it will usually provide some coverage for mental health treatment. We will assist you in filling out forms and provide you with whatever assistance we can in helping you receive the benefits to which you are entitled; however, you (not your insurance company) are responsible for full payment of my fees. It is very important that you find out exactly what mental health services your insurance policy covers.

I am a provider for BUPA, AXA, Pruhealth, Norwich and others. We will seek information about health insurance at the first session.
